Family Service

Family Service

Children and young people are an important part of our church family, and we’re proud of the children’s and youth ministry we offer - both within our church family and in our local communities.

At regular intervals through the year, our fantastic children and youth work team, or sometimes the young people themselves, take over the main meeting for a Family Service, suitable for all ages.

These are always times of great fun, exploring Jesus together.

When Covid-19 restrictions allow, meetings are held at The Durham Centre. Details of specific meetings will be published as the date approaches.

We’re blessed to have many children and young people in our church - and amazing children’s and youth work leaders!

Several times each year, we hold Family services, where we all stay in the main service together, for a service suitable for all ages.

These services are shorter than usual, lasting one hour. And they’re always great fun!

Safeguarding training
Jun
2
3:00 PM15:00

Safeguarding training

As a church we want to care for all our people well, whatever their ages, backgrounds or experiences. To help us in this, we are providing some Safeguarding training: two free, two-hour sessions: on May 19 and June 2, 3-5pm, at The Durham Centre. The second session will be a repeat the first - so you need only attend one of the two.

Please attend if you are involved in children or youth work in any way, or if you might be interested in helping out in future.

We're looking to develop a 'bank' of people willing to help out if the need arises, so if this could be you, please come along too.

For more information or to sign up, please see Stephen Jones. Email: pastoral@emmanuel.org.uk

Supporting our young people to flourish
Apr

Supporting our young people to flourish

We are excited about how God is working in the lives our young people, and expanding our ministry with young people.

Project Arrow is a programme through which young people can be discipled: supported and stretched in faith.

The programme will be relaunched on Sunday 29th April, at The Durham Centre, immediately after our morning service.

This session will run for approximately 90 minutes and include some teaching on discipleship, looking at the handbook for Project Arrow, looking through resources and sharing good practice.

All are welcome. Please bring lunch. If you plan to attend, please email: naomi.ryan@emmanuel.org.uk

Following this session, there will be drop-in sessions, probably on a monthly basis, where those discipling young people can meet Pete Gray or Naomi Ryan, to discuss challenges, good practice and useful resources.

Prayer and Pancakes

Prayer and Pancakes

What goes well with pancakes…that’s right, prayer! This Shrove Tuesday (28th February) we will be having a prayer event to lift up to God all of the youth work that’s run by Emmanuel.

It will be a great opportunity to be thankful for all that’s happened over the years, as well as pray into the future work we hope to do. Everyone from the church is invited to join us (even if you’ve never been involved with the youth work before!) so please come along if you can.

The event will run 7:30pm-9:00pm at the Lawrence’s house (17 Herefordshire Drive, Durham. DH1 2DQ) with tea and coffee (and of course pancakes!) available.

If you’d like to come along, please could you send Helen Edwards an email: emmanuelchurch.youthwork@hotmail.com or speak to her in person at church – this is just so we have a rough idea of how many people may be attending.

There will be stalls, including Decorating Ninja Gingerbread, Chinese lantern making, card making, a tombola, a BBQ, cake stall, crafts, teas and coffees, Mario Kart games, a Great Wall of China penny trail (so bring your pennies!) and a nail bar with Chinese tattoos, cards and much more.

Project Arrow
Feb
27
7:00 AM07:00

Project Arrow

Recently Pete Gray, one of our children and youth work deacons, and Helen Edwards, our youth worker, shared about our growing youth and children's ministry and the need to steward it well.

Wonderfully in the last year we have set up a what we call Project Arrow, named after Psalm 127 (see below).

Project Arrow is an opportunity for people (and those who wouldn't normally see themselves doing traditional youth work) to come alongside young people connected with our church in a discipleship capacity.

We have about 12 young people currently being discipled but there is opportunity for more people to get involved. If you are interested please speak to Dan Lee, Pete Gray and Helen Edwards. We have an event on Saturday 27th February where you can find out more.

Unless the Lord builds the house,
the builders labour in vain.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the guards stand watch in vain.
In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to those he loves.
Children are a heritage from the Lord,
offspring a reward from him.
Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are children born in one’s youth.
Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their opponents in court.
— Psalm 127

Newday!

to Aug 9

Newday!

From Monday, 18 young people, six adults and one event serving teams member from our church will be at Newday, the Newfrontiers camping event for 12 to 19-year-olds at Norfolk Showground.

It’s going to be a time of fun, worship and challenge where we will be hearing a range of talks about following Christ day by day. Please pray for the young people as we go as it is a time where many find a real closeness with God and make personal commitments in their journey of faith.
Also for the team, please pray for wisdom and God’s guidance as we lead the young people and building of discipling relationships.
